Song Review: Ruin My Life by Zara Larsson

Welcome to Song Review, where I talk about songs that are popular inside the States and international. Let’s talk about Europe. Europe has gave us so many new artists from many distinctive genres, especially the United Kingdom and Sweden. Sweden has gave us so many new upcoming artists in the past decade like John Martin, Avicii(R.I.P) and Swedish House Mafia. But there is one artist in particular who stood the most to me and that was Zara Larsson. Zara Larsson is a pop singer who had so much potential with her three big singles, Lush Life and her collaborations with Clean Bandit in Symphony and MNEK in Never Forget You. But she didn’t really live up to it in her album So Good back in 2017 and I thought that her time would be up. But eventually, she came back with a new single that has charted in the US, Canada, her home country Sweden and the UK. This is Ruin My Life.

I miss you pushing me close to the edge
I miss you

Okay, I see that this is her trying to reconcile with her ex. But I’m not seeing that there should be a possible reason for them to go back together.

I wish I knew what I had when I left
I miss you

So, what I’m seeing is that you don’t even know why you left this guy. And you telling us that you left something that was really important for you and you wish that you can remember what it was? OK

You set fire to my world, couldn’t handle the heat
Now I’m sleeping alone and I’m starting to freeze
Baby, come bring me help
Let it rain over me
Baby, come back to me

Seriously Zara, what the fuck are you talking about. I get that you’re desperate to get this guy back and restart your relationship, but I’m not getting what is going on here with the melodramatic tone, here. So please Zara, what do you want from him?

I want you to ruin my life
You to ruin my life, yeah, to ruin my life, yeah
I want you to fuck up my nights, yeah
Fuck up my nights, yeah, all of my nights, yeah
I want you to bring it all on
If you make it all wrong, then I’ll make it all right, yeah
I want you to ruin my life
Yeah, to ruin my life, yeah, to ruin my life
I want you to ruin my life
You to ruin my life, yeah, to ruin my life, yeah
I want you to fuck up my nights, yeah
Fuck up my nights, yeah, all of my nights, yeah
I want you to bring it all on
If you make it all wrong, then I’ll make it all right, yeah
I want you to ruin my life
Yeah, to ruin my life, yeah, to ruin my life

So let me get this straight, you want this guy to come back and “ruin your life?” Why would you want that? I mean I get that you meant that you want him back for sex, but I think you should’ve reword it differently like “Fix My Life” or “Revise My Life.” Just saying.

I miss you more than I thought that I could
I miss you
I know you missin’ me too like you should
I miss you

You know, you’re not really working with me here. And there is no explanation for you to explain why you want this guy back. So please, give me some details.

I miss you, I miss you-ooh
I wish you, I wish you-ooh
Would come back, would come back to me
Come back to me, come back to me

Fuck it, I’m done with this shit

Verdict: This song is lazy and a waste of potential. I don’t understand what Zara is really going for in this song. The production is fine and Zara makes up for it with a solid performance. But the real reason it falls apart is because of the lyrics. I get that she’s trying to making a “I want you to come back to me” song, but the execution falls flat due to the lack of details about why she want this guy back. Also, there may be implications that this guy is abusive, since he likes to “fuck up her nights.” This song kinda reminds me of Selena Gomez’s Back to You. Even though it involves the same concept(and it not a very good song), but she knew what she’s talking about with the details being there, but in this, it doesn’t work and it’s a Zara made this because she can do so much better than this. And if you like this, that’s cool and I can respect that, but for me, it’s just a waste of time. Sorry

Grade: D+

Thank you for coming. And if you have thoughts about this song, leave it in the comments.

This is Phantomonium going back into the darkness.
